Course Outline (6 units)
· Unit 1 – Digital Drawing Basics
o We will practice basic skills using digital drawing tablets and Photoshop. Students will begin by exploring different brush tools and then develop skills in drawing realistic images.
o Capstone Project – A still life drawing of everyday items capturing detail, proportion, and value.
· Unit 2 – Character Design
o We will apply our drawing skills to practicing drawing human features. Students will use reference photos to study human proportions of the body and face. They will apply their skills to creating an original character with visual storytelling elements.
o Capstone Project – Finished character design with elements that convey story ideas and genre information.
· Unit 3 – Environment Design
o Students will practice drawing realistic landscapes that convey linear perspective, atmospheric perspective, and color theory. They will apply these skills to create various landscapes in natural and man-made environments while emphasizing narrative features.
o Capstone Project – Finished landscape design in full color.
· Unit 4 – Product Design
o Students will create logo designs for products the develop from their imagination. They will continue to develop their understanding of color theory while also practicing 2-Dimensional design skills.
o Capstone Project – A finished product logo that uses the formal elements of art and principles of design to convey visual information.
· Unit 5 – Graphic Narrative
o Students will apply their illustration and design skills to create graphic narratives of integrated words and pictures They will have to develop a story idea by building on the sketches, character, and environment design work they have compiled through the year up to this point. They will write a short script and develop that script into a finished comic.
o Capstone Project – Finished graphic novel that utilizes students’ learning in drawing techniques, character design, landscape design, 2D design and comic composition principles.
· Unit 6 – Media Literacy and Self-Promotion
o Students will compile their work from the year into a professional portfolio for presentation on the web. They will learn about current issues in self-promotion while developing skills in responsible safe and ethical digital citizenship.
Capstone Project – Students will develop an online gallery show complete with artist statement that presents their best work.
General notes
· PHONES – Phones are not allowed during class time at all. If your phone is out during class, I will take it. If you don’t give up your phone to me, you will be escorted to N11.
· HATS & HOODS - Can’t cover your ears to hide headphones during lecture.
· MUSIC – Plug your headphones into your computer if you don’t want to listen to my music during work time. If your phone is out to play music I will take it.
o No headphones will be worn during instruction.
· FOOD/DRINK – No food or open drink containers during class. Keep your computer area clean!

Your final grade will be comprised of:
1/3 Daily Effort
1/3 Progress Score
1/3 Proficiency
You will be given a daily score for your ability to focus and engage with your artistic practice. That score will go in the gradebook. These are easy points and should function to pad your grade by about 10%
· I do not accept late work after one week.
· Late work is docked 10% every day.
· If you have a specific issue, come talk to me.

· Classroom Supplies
· Any student intentionally defacing, damaging or destroying classroom supplies will be prevented from using the supplies for the rest of the quarter or semester depending on the severity of the infraction. This will result in a lower grade and alternate written assignment.
· Students are financially responsible for repairing or replacing any damaged class electronics.
· Students coming in tardy are required to have a pass.
· Students not in their assigned seat when the bell rings will be marked absent.
· If you are absent, it is your responsibility to make up the missing work.
· Make an appointment with me for lunch or afterschool
· Email me or send me a message on Teams.
When things go sideways in class I will:
· Make an effort to repair the relationship
· Give a verbal/nonverbal warning and muted student.
· Have a private chat/One on one meeting with student.
· Ask student to “give back” time taken from class during lunch or after school. Parent/guardian will be notified.
· Make a phone call to parent/guardian
· Refer student to N11.
· Have a parent-teacher conference and the student may be taken out of course
