WHAT ARE WE LEARNING: How to create recognizable characters by drawing silhouettes or shadow outlines of their bodies.
WHY IS IT IMPORTANT: Great character designs don't are more than just detailed drawings, they communicate character identity and traits very quickly with clear shapes and outlines.

A silhouette is the solid, black outline or shape of a character that shows their pose, proportions, and personality without any details. A strong silhouette helps the character be instantly recognizable and easy to understand, even in simple form.

- Instantly Recognizable: The character’s outline should be readable in 1–2 seconds, even without details.
- Clear Shapes & Posing: The pose should separate limbs and avoid “tangents” where body parts overlap and disappear.
- Strong Shape Language: Use simple, bold shapes (circles, squares, triangles) that match the character’s personality.
- Balanced Visual Weight: The silhouette should feel stable, intentional, and not accidentally tilted or awkward.
- Story in the Outline: Props, clothing, or unique features should still communicate something about the character even in pure black.
